Ryan Reynolds record Wrexham signing KOd by massive error after Deadline Day drama

Ryan Reynolds’ record Wrexham signing has fallen through thanks to what fans are describing as a major “c*** up”.

The Red Dragons appeared to have pulled off a late Deadline Day swoop by signing Harrogate Town star Luke Armstrong. Wrexham had looked unlikely to land their man with Friday’s deadline fast approaching.

Sulphurites boss Simon Weaver claimed a “significant” fee, reportedly in the region of £500,000, would have to be forked out for his striker. Yet Wrexham managed to tempt the North Yorkshire side into seemingly parting ways with the 27-year-old late in the day, with their bid exceeding the £300,000 they splurged on Ollie Palmer in January 2022.

However Wrexham confirmed on Saturday morning they were not able to get the deal over the line.

A statement read: "Wrexham AFC can confirm terms were agreed to sign Harrogate Town striker Luke Armstrong on Transfer Deadline Day, with paperwork submitted for his signing.

"Unfortunately, the required documentation and clearance requests could not be completed in time and his registration has been rejected.

"As a result, Luke remains a Harrogate Town player.

"The club would like to thank the player for choosing to join Wrexham earlier in the day and are disappointed that this cannot now happen (pending any appeal)."

Harrogate had announced the transfer on Friday with boss Simon Weaver saying: "We have reluctantly decided that Luke can go to another club. It has taken its time because we wanted to keep him.

"We wanted to look after the club and get a good fee in and we’ve managed to do that, but we wish him well. I think it’s a winning situation for him and for the club because we’ve got a really good fee."

Wrexham supporters responded with panic on social media, bewildered that Reynolds and Rob McElhenney's efforts to bring in their record signing were ultimately for nothing.

One angry fan wrote on X: "This is a complete joke of a situation," while another fumed: "What a complete c**k up!"

A third added: "Who's messed up the submission then..." while another commented: "A strongly worded letter might be necessary if the deal falls through."

Armstrong signed for Harrogate from Salford City in the summer of 2021. He scored 14 goals in his first season before bagging 16 last term, having featured in all of Harrogate's 46 league appearances.
